The Department of Vascular Surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital and Institute arranges a symposium every second year in the field of vascular surgery under the heading “Bringing Basic Science into Clinical Practice”. Previous meetings have focused on lower limb ischemia, aortic aneurysm, diabetes and carotid disease. Next year’s meeting will focus on endovascular surgery.

The amount of knowledge in biomedical science and the speed at which it is distributed is increasing. This makes it important for clinicians at academic institutions to bridge the gap between basic science and clinical practice. It has been the goal of the previous symposia to channel important new knowledge to vascular surgeons and other specialists in vascular disease so that patients can benefit from scientific findings without undue delay.

There are many important aspects of endovascular surgery, where basic scientific knowledge is of great importance. Vessel wall reactions resulting from balloons, stents and stent grafts are important to understand in order to prevent and treat unwanted sequelae due to the vessel wall injury associated with the endovascular procedures. These factors as well as biomechanical issues in relation to endovascular procedures and future development of endovascular devices will be reviewed. This background will be followed by clinical aspects of endovascular procedures.

The meeting is based on lectures by invited experts. We also welcome abstracts. Some will be presented immediately after the presentations of the invited speakers and the authors will have the possibility to discuss their findings with the faculty of the meeting during the discussion. Others will be presented as posters.

The meeting is at the time of the vernal (spring) equinox when day and night are equal in length. Even though spring is approaching weather may be cold and you can experience a different view of Stockholm than what is usually known. We will try to compensate for the cold with a warm welcome, an interesting meeting and a friendly social program.

We wish you most welcome to participate.

Jesper Swedenborg, Professor
Chairman of the Organising Committee
